Mark Burnell lived in Amsterdam for a couple months playing keyboard for improv comedy at Boom Chicago. He acquired a used bicycle, called “Fiets” in Dutch, and spent each day riding around and exploring this city, where there are far more bikes than cars. Bonus: Check out the official video on YouTube by Tom Frantz.
Lyrics
In Amsterdam a bicycle can be quite a thrill
Except when cars are heading for you, right for the kill
They challenge you and give you just enough space to pass
You thread the needle and miss ‘em, or you fall right on your ass
We cycle and recycle, never walk or hike
Fight the cars and weather, a chain gang of bikes
We’re healthy and we’re sweaty, from kind to man to frau
We even have a slogan - Fiets Don’t Fail Me Now
Bikers feel superior to folks just walking around
Who gives a damn about anyone with both feet on the ground
We ride behind pedestrians and when they get real near
Just ring the bell to clear a path, or smack ‘em in the rear
We cycle and recycle, never walk or hike
Fight the cars and weather, a chain gang of bikes
We’re healthy and we’re sweaty, from kind to man to frau
We even have a slogan - Fiets Don’t Fail Me Now
We try to cross the tram tracks without getting thrown
And carry brave passengers, even when we’re stoned
We dare to hold umbrellas, while riding in the rain
And try to trick those clever thieves with lots of locks and chains
We cycle and recycle, never walk or hike
Fight the cars and weather, a chain gang of bikes
We’re healthy and we’re sweaty, from kind to man to frau
We even have a slogan - Fiets Don’t Fail Me Now
Fiets don’t fail Me now, Fiets don’t fail me now
